At least 14 schoolchildren lost their lives in Lahore, Pakistan, when the roof of a tutoring center collapsed, as confirmed by emergency officials. Additionally, eight children sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital, according to senior police official Faisal Kamran, who mentioned that the owner of the tutoring center and another individual have been taken into custody.
Rescuers are actively searching through the debris after receiving reports that more children may still be trapped under the rubble. It was reported by Mr. Kamran that the tutoring center was situated in an old building, and the roof of an incomplete second floor collapsed due to poor construction quality.
Expressing sorrow over the incident at the evening school building, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari extended condolences to the victims’ families, wished a speedy recovery for the injured, and emphasized the importance of implementing effective safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Building collapses are a frequent occurrence in Pakistan due to lax enforcement of construction standards. Many structures are constructed using subpar materials, and safety protocols are often disregarded to cut costs.
Following the roof collapse, ambulances, and rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene. Local residents also participated in the rescue efforts, using shovels and their hands to clear debris in a bid to reach any children trapped beneath.
As the bodies of the deceased children were returned to their families, scenes of grief unfolded outside hospitals and in the surrounding neighborhood on the outskirts of Lahore where the tutoring center was housed in a residential building. Most of the victims resided nearby, and funeral prayers were scheduled for later in the day.
Residents expressed a mix of grief and anger, demanding strict punishment for the tutoring center owner, whom they blamed for conducting classes in an unsafe, dilapidated building. Mourners gathered outside the homes of the victims to offer condolences, reflecting the community’s solidarity and support during this tragic time.
Lahore, the capital of Punjab province in Pakistan, sees a high number of parents enrolling their children in private tutoring centers during afternoon and evening hours.
