“Tragic 1978 Bath Incident Unfolds in Court”

A court has heard that a five-year-old girl expressed distress before being immersed in scalding water by Janice Nix, resulting in her death. Nix, 67, is facing manslaughter charges for the incident that occurred in 1978 in Thornton Heath, south London. The tragedy was initially considered an accident until the victim’s brother, Desmond Bernard, came forward to the authorities in 2022.

During the trial at Isleworth Crown Court, Mr. Bernard, now 56, testified that Nix frequently subjected the children to physical abuse, including for minor infractions like not meeting her standards in tasks such as folding clothes.

On the day of the incident, Andrea, the young girl, disobeyed Nix’s instructions and was reprimanded for not assisting with household chores. Mr. Bernard recounted hearing commotion emanating from the bathroom where Nix was instructing Andrea to enter a hot bath despite the girl’s protests about the water’s temperature.

Following the tragic event, Nix allegedly asked Mr. Bernard to fabricate a story to cover up the incident, emphasizing that it should be portrayed as an accident. Fearing further repercussions from Nix, Mr. Bernard complied with her directive and misled authorities about the circumstances surrounding his sister’s death.

Mr. Bernard also revealed a history of abuse inflicted by Nix, detailing instances of physical violence and psychological torment endured during his childhood. He described living in constant fear of Nix’s punishments, which prevented him from seeking help or disclosing the abuse to others.

The court learned that Nix, then known as Janice Thomas, was involved with the children’s father and acted as a stepmother to Desmond and Andrea. The siblings initially displayed hostility towards Nix, reflecting their confusion and discomfort with her presence in their home.

Mr. Bernard disclosed that the abuse escalated the day after the fatal incident, with Nix subjecting both children to severe physical discipline in their father’s absence. The threats of further harm and intimidation tactics used by Nix instilled fear in the siblings, preventing them from seeking assistance.

In a bid to address the trauma and injustice surrounding his sister’s death, Mr. Bernard decided to speak out, seeking to hold Nix accountable for her actions. Nix, residing in Clapham, south London, has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and cruelty towards Mr. Bernard for the period spanning from October 1975 to June 1978. The trial is ongoing.
