A woman is deeply saddened that safety measures have not been implemented at a beach where her childhood best friend drowned, along with two other individuals. Becca Ringwood, a friend of Jordan Moon who tragically passed away 23 years ago at Seaton Carew beach, has been advocating for lifeguards to be stationed there throughout the summer. Hartlepool Borough Council leader Graham Harrison has called for a comprehensive review of the current water safety protocols at Seaton Carew.
Over the weekend, Wayne Taylor and Ian Pascoe entered the water to rescue Taylor’s children, resulting in a heroic but tragic outcome where both men lost their lives. Dan Pascoe, Ian Pascoe’s son, expressed frustration at the need for individuals to risk their lives in such situations and offered condolences to the Taylor family while acknowledging the efforts of Davey Short, a bystander who aided in the rescue.
Following a recent series of water-related fatalities during the heatwave, the Mirror initiated a nationwide water safety campaign earlier this year. Ms. Ringwood shared her personal experience of losing a friend to a water incident in 2003 and her two-decade-long advocacy for lifeguards at Seaton Carew. Her petition for continuous lifeguard coverage during the summer has garnered significant support.
The tragic incident at Seaton Carew beach claimed the lives of Mr. Taylor and Mr. Pascoe, prompting calls to extend lifeguard services beyond the summer holidays. Dan Pascoe expressed gratitude towards the RNLI and emergency services for their efforts and highlighted the importance of raising awareness about water safety through various measures, including the presence of lifeguards and safety barriers.
The Mirror’s “Save Lives For Sam” water safety campaign aims to address the rising drowning crisis in the UK by advocating for compulsory water safety education in schools, a nationwide awareness campaign, enhanced lifesaving equipment at high-risk water bodies, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
