Tragic Bungee Jumping Accident Claims Two Teen Lives

Published on

Two adolescents tragically lost their lives in a bungee jumping accident as one of their parents witnessed the horrifying incident. The incident took place at the Beach Bungee attraction in the Grand Strand area of South Carolina, USA.

The individuals involved were 17-year-old Zachary Steinke and 19-year-old Michael Nash, who worked as a “bungee jump master” at Beach Bungee. The attraction featured a 175-foot-tall archway where visitors were raised in a cage resembling a lift.

The two teenagers were elevated to a height of approximately 150 to 160 feet inside the steel jump cage, unaware that the original chain-driven lifting mechanism was malfunctioning. Instead of replacing the faulty system with a similar one, the owners opted for a makeshift solution using a commercial shrimping method alongside a wire rope.

Unfortunately, the installed system was inadequate, leading to a tragic outcome. The incident occurred on a rainy evening of August 10, 1993, which reduced visibility as the cage ascended. The wire rope failed to bear the weight, snapping under strain.

Subsequently, the cage plummeted 150 feet to the ground, resulting in fatal injuries to Zachary and Michael. Zachary’s parents watched in horror as their son fell to his death before attempting CPR.

Following the tragedy, a legal dispute unfolded. Attorney John Kassel, representing the families, revealed that the cable snapped due to the lack of safety measures in the bungee jump winch system, causing the fatal fall of the cage.

In 1995, the victims’ families secured a $12 million judgment against the individual owners of Beach Bungee after the court held them personally accountable for bypassing safety protocols to preserve summer tourist business.

Kassel pursued a second case against the South Carolina Department of Labor, overcoming legal obstacles to secure a $2 million verdict, which was upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court. Through these legal battles, Kassel developed a close bond with the families of the two boys.
