The holiday season should have been a joyous time for Za’Zell Preston, celebrating Christmas with her seven-week-old infant and two other children.
In 2011, the 26-year-old from Anaheim, California, had her apartment filled with festive decorations and gifts, anticipating a perfect Christmas. However, beneath the cheerful facade, Za’Zell was enduring a nightmarish reality that culminated in a tragic incident of murder.
Trapped in a tumultuous and abusive relationship with her spouse, William Wallace, for three years, Za’Zell witnessed a distressing escalation of control and violence from the 30-year-old. Despite repeated threats and episodes of abuse, she consistently forgave him, as recounted to her concerned friends and family.
Previously, in 2008, Wallace had been incarcerated for assaulting Za’Zell, serving a brief sentence, undergoing probation, and mandated to attend a rehabilitation program. Following this, Za’Zell obtained a restraining order, and when Wallace violated it, he was returned to prison.
Upon Wallace’s release in 2011, he moved back in with Za’Zell and her daughters, attempting to rebuild their family life. Despite outward appearances, the reality of their relationship was far from harmonious.
In a misguided attempt to escape the abuse cycle, Za’Zell pursued higher education and training to become a counselor for domestic violence victims. As Christmas drew near, she was on the verge of completing her studies.
Tragically, on Christmas Day at 9:30 a.m., Wallace alerted emergency services, claiming his wife required medical assistance. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered Za’Zell in a critical condition on the sofa, amidst a scene of violence with bloodstains, damaged walls, and a shattered glass table.
Despite the chaos, the children remained oblivious inside the apartment, surrounded by torn wrapping paper and unopened gifts. Za’Zell was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced deceased.
Subsequent investigations and Wallace’s arrest unveiled the grim sequence of events from the previous night. Following a dispute after attending a neighbor’s Christmas Eve gathering, Wallace subjected Za’Zell to a violent episode, resulting in her tragic demise.
Witnesses reported hearing distressing shouts during the altercation as Wallace inflicted physical harm on Za’Zell. The brutality continued with him callously positioning her body and misleading the children about the circumstances, even capturing the disturbing scene on video.
Years of abuse came to light during Wallace’s trial, where prosecutors detailed his prolonged threats and eventual fulfillment of his promise to harm Za’Zell on Christmas Day.
Family members recounted harrowing instances of Za’Zell enduring Wallace’s violence, highlighting the pervasive fear and trauma she endured. The court also heard emotional testimonies from witnesses, including Za’Zell’s daughter, describing the tragic events that unfolded that fateful Christmas.
