An 18-month-old girl tragically passed away after reportedly being left unattended inside a nursery transport vehicle for an extended period of time. The toddler, identified as Sofia, was picked up in the morning for nursery in Portugal but was inadvertently left inside the vehicle, unbeknownst to nursery staff. When Sofia’s mother arrived to collect her in the afternoon, she was shocked to learn that her daughter had never made it to nursery that day.

Sofia’s grandmother expressed disbelief at the situation, mentioning that Sofia’s daily drop-off and arrival times were usually recorded, but on that day, no such records were available. The incident occurred at a nursery in the Pragal area, although the vehicle was parked at a different site operated by the same institution.

Emergency services were called to the scene, where attempts were made to rescue Sofia from the vehicle. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, Sofia was pronounced dead on-site. Authorities are treating the case as a suspected incident of accidental negligence, with an investigation launched by Portugal’s Judicial Police.

The president of the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims highlighted the apparent negligence in the incident, emphasizing that it was not a deliberate act but a grave oversight that led to the child’s death. He pointed out that proper procedures were not followed, indicating a clear case of negligence that warrants thorough investigation.

The president expressed sympathy for all those affected by the tragedy, including the school staff, parents, and family members, emphasizing that they, along with Sofia, were the primary victims in this unfortunate event.
