A tragic incident unfolded at Davis Station in Boston as 40-year-old Steven McCluskey lost his balance on an escalator in the early hours of February 27. Surveillance footage released by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority revealed that more than a dozen individuals passed by McCluskey without offering assistance as he struggled with his coat caught at the escalator’s base.
Despite his attempts to free himself, McCluskey’s clothing tightened around his neck, impeding his breathing. Eventually, he collapsed and remained motionless on the escalator until an employee intervened about 20 minutes later. Medical personnel arrived shortly after, finding McCluskey unresponsive and trapped at the bottom of the escalator.
Firefighters onsite discovered that McCluskey’s skin had been pulled into the escalator, prompting concerns that dismantling the machinery might be necessary for his rescue. Tragically, McCluskey, a father of two and a carpenter, succumbed to his injuries on March 9 after being in a coma for 10 days.
His family has urged the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and hold the MBTA accountable. Remembered for his dedication to his loved ones and his passion for carpentry, McCluskey’s untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
