In the early hours of the morning, a tragic incident unfolded as a fire engulfed a woman’s apartment, resulting in her untimely death. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the substantial blaze in Shrewsbury, but sadly, Rose Roberts, aged in her 80s, could not be rescued and was pronounced dead at the location.

Her daughter, Jessica Richards, fondly remembered her mother as a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many. Ms. Richards, the proprietor of Shrewsbury Arts and Crafts Centre, shared how her mother had previously played a pivotal role in preserving the historical timber-framed building where the fire occurred.

The distinctive building, situated in the heart of the town, had a notable appearance in the 1984 rendition of A Christmas Carol. Ms. Richards expressed her devastation, stating, “My mother Rose Roberts was instrumental in safeguarding these structures, and tragically, she perished in the fire. It is a profound loss as she meant everything to me.”

Eyewitness Dorian Gerhold, residing opposite the incident, recounted being awakened by the sound of falling slates around 4 am and witnessing flames emanating from the house. Despite the absence of sirens initially, the fire was eventually brought under control by diligent responders, though the building continued to smolder into the morning.

The property housed a gift shop on the ground floor, and although the female resident was evaluated at the scene, she declined hospital treatment. Authorities confirmed that the fire was contained, and efforts were underway to ascertain the cause of the tragic event through a collaborative investigation involving fire and police services.

The community was advised to steer clear of the affected area as firefighting teams endeavored to quell the flames. Road closures were implemented between Shrewsbury Library and St Mary’s Place, with updates from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service indicating progress in managing the incident.

Amid ongoing efforts to address the situation, Shropshire Council established an emergency contact number for individuals seeking information on evacuated loved ones. The fire was deemed non-suspicious, with a detailed inquiry planned to determine the precise origin of the blaze.
