A tragic incident unfolded in Barcelona today as a passenger train crashed, resulting in the death of the train operator and numerous injuries among the passengers. This unfortunate event occurred just 48 hours after a separate train accident in southern Spain claimed the lives of 42 individuals and left many others wounded.

Authorities indicated that the most recent derailment was triggered by a collapse of a retaining wall onto the railway tracks. Reports from local media outlets suggested that around 20 individuals sustained injuries during the collision.

The country initiated a three-day period of mourning for the victims of the catastrophic train crash that transpired on Sunday. The collision involved a northbound and southbound train, carrying nearly 500 passengers collectively, near Adamuz in Spain’s Córdoba province, resulting in significant casualties.

In response to the Barcelona crash, fifteen ambulances and 35 fire crews rushed to the accident site, as reported by the Spanish news agency EFE. Firefighters worked diligently to rescue individuals trapped inside the train carriages.

The incident occurred on a commuter train traveling between the towns of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Gelida, approximately 40 kilometers away from Barcelona, amid adverse weather conditions in the region.

The Sunday crash took place at 7:45 p.m. when the rear part of a train carrying 289 passengers on the route from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with an oncoming train heading from Madrid to Huelva, another city in the south, according to rail operator Adif.

Tragically, among the casualties in the collision were the parents of a young girl who had attended the Lion King musical in Madrid on Sunday night.

Fidel Saez, who lost his mother in the accident, shared how his brother miraculously survived along with his children, brother, and nephew, recounting the harrowing experience of escaping the wreckage.

The impact of the collision primarily affected the front section of the Madrid to Huelva train, causing the first two carriages to derail and plunge down a slope, with bodies thrown considerable distances from the crash scene, as stated by Andalusia regional President Juanma Moren.
