One of Rachel Reeves’s Treasury ministers is set to reveal a support package for struggling pubs in the UK today. The focus of the support is expected to be on business rates, as pub owners and industry leaders have raised concerns that an increase in rates scheduled for April could lead to numerous closures. Reports indicate that the Treasury’s assistance will amount to approximately £100 million annually for pubs, along with revisions to licensing regulations.
Pubs are bracing for higher bills in April due to upcoming changes in business rates and the phasing out of Covid-related discounts announced during the Budget in November. However, the government recently confirmed adjustments to these plans after hearing feedback from publicans through Rachel Reeves. The details of the support package will be outlined in a statement to the Commons by Treasury Minister Dan Tomlison around 1:30 pm. Tomlison informed MPs this morning about the introduction of a £4.3 billion support package to aid rate payers, with a specific emphasis on pubs.
This announcement is seen as a success for the Mirror’s Your Pub Needs You campaign. The latest data indicates that 188 pubs closed in the final quarter of 2025, with the majority being community pubs that heavily rely on beverage sales. Additionally, the report from NIQ and CGA intelligence shows a decrease in food-led pubs and high street venues.
Despite this support for pubs, there may still be pressure on the Chancellor to extend assistance to the broader hospitality industry, with some Labour MPs advocating for aid to struggling music venues.
