“Trial Set for Man in Deaths of British ‘Red Caps’ in Iraq”

Published on

A man is set to face trial for his involvement in an attack that resulted in the deaths of six British military policemen known as “Red Caps” in Iraq over two decades ago.

The incident took place in 2003 when a group of approximately 400 individuals ambushed the Red Caps at a police station in Majar al-Kabir. Among the victims were Lance Cpl Ben Hyde, Cpl Russell Aston, Sgt Simon Hamilton-Jewell, Lance Cpl Tom Keys, Cpl Paul Long, and Cpl Simon Miller.

The families of the deceased soldiers believe the deaths could have been prevented, citing inadequate ammunition and communication equipment at the time of the attack. Alaa Jabbar Khodhair was convicted of murder in absentia by an Iraqi court last year and has since surrendered, seeking a retrial scheduled for May 3.

The quest for justice has been a longstanding effort led by Cpl Miller’s family and other bereaved families. John, the father of Simon, expressed skepticism about the upcoming retrial, highlighting previous shortcomings in the legal process.

John disclosed receiving information about the attackers shortly after the incident, emphasizing his relentless pursuit of the truth from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). He expressed disappointment in the handling of the investigation and voiced concerns about the forthcoming trial.

In response to remarks made by Donald Trump regarding British military involvement in Afghanistan, John criticized the lack of an apology for the insensitive comments. He highlighted the sacrifices made by UK service personnel in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Ministry of Defence affirmed its commitment to seeking justice for the fallen Red Cap soldiers, emphasizing its limited role in the legal proceedings. Family members of the victims were assured of support and representation during the trial.
