“Trinidad and Tobago Authorities Investigate 56 Bodies Found in Cemetery”

Published on

An inquiry has been initiated following the discovery of over 50 infant bodies and six adult bodies that were discarded in a cemetery. Law enforcement officials in Trinidad and Tobago disclosed that a total of 56 bodies, predominantly infants, were found at a cemetery in the country over the weekend.

The nation, consisting of two Caribbean islands, has been grappling with a rise in criminal activities, including lethal gang conflicts, leading to the recent extension of a state of emergency by the authorities. The unsettling finding was uncovered at the Cumuto town cemetery on Trinidad, approximately 40km (25 miles) east of the capital, Port of Spain.

Reports from the police indicate that out of the 56 bodies, 50 were infants while the remaining six were adults, comprising four men and two women. Authorities mentioned that five of the adults had identification tags commonly used in morgues, and two bodies showed signs of having undergone autopsies. Identification of the bodies was not immediately confirmed.

Law enforcement officials stated that efforts are underway to trace the origin of the human remains and identify any potential violations of laws or protocols. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro stressed the importance of treating every cadaver with respect and in compliance with the law, emphasizing that any misconduct will face strict consequences. Initial investigations suggest a possible scenario of the “unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.”

Since the state of emergency declaration on March 2, the US State Department has released multiple travel advisories for Trinidad and Tobago due to concerns related to crime and an escalated risk of terrorism. Despite a notable decline in violent crime in the country since 2024 due to enhanced security measures during previous emergencies, criminal activities continue to pose a significant challenge nationwide.
