Ian Huntley remains in a serious condition as he spends his sixth day in the hospital, according to Durham Constabulary. The 52-year-old was discovered in a pool of blood at HMP Frankland last Thursday after a vicious attack involving repeated blows to the head with a metal pole, rendering him too injured for immediate airlifting. Although not officially confirmed, triple murderer Anthony Russell is identified as the primary suspect in the assault at Frankland Prison’s workshop.

Following the incident, Huntley was quickly taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where he has been kept in a medically induced coma. Durham Constabulary provided an update stating that his condition has not changed, and he remains hospitalized in a serious state.

A man in his mid-40s has been detained within the prison in connection with the incident, though no formal arrest has been made yet. Reports indicate that Russell reportedly exclaimed, “I’ve done it, I’ve done it,” as Huntley sustained severe head injuries at HMP Frankland in Durham.

Russell received a whole-life sentence in 2021 for the murders of Julie Williams, David Williams, and pregnant Nicole McGregor. Huntley, on the other hand, is serving a life sentence for the tragic murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, during his employment as a caretaker at their school in Soham, Cambridgeshire. Prior to this recent attack, Huntley had been targeted in two previous assaults during his 24 years of incarceration.
