A former adviser to President Donald Trump has shared the counsel he provides to other countries when they encounter challenges with the polarizing leader.
John Bolton, previously a national security adviser to Trump and a US ambassador to the United Nations, made these comments during King Charles‘s ongoing first state visit to the USA.
This visit follows Trump’s state visit to the UK less than a year ago, a visit Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer referred to as “unprecedented” early last year. Bolton suggests that other nations with functioning monarchies should consider similar state visits to navigate challenges with Trump.
During an interview with The Times’ The Royals podcast, John Bolton stated, “I have advised other countries with monarchs that if they face difficulties with Trump, they should invite Trump for a state visit to meet their monarch and host them here.”
Bolton added, “We’ll see if this strategy extends beyond the UK. It proved effective with the Emperor of Japan when Trump visited during my White House tenure.”
If Bolton’s theory holds true, countries like Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Belgium could gain an edge as Trump’s stance towards Europe becomes more hostile, as reported by the Express.
In recent times, concerns have escalated over Trump’s skepticism towards NATO, particularly his criticism of the disparity in defense spending between the US and other European members.
The growing divide between the US and Europe, especially the UK, has led global leaders to balance appeasing Trump while preparing for a future where US security assurances may diminish.
Consequently, much attention is on the impact of King Charles and Queen Camilla‘s US visit on the remaining Special Relationship between the two nations.
