Donald Trump is exploring options to penalize NATO allies who have not supported his conflict with Iran. The US President is said to be creating a list categorizing NATO countries based on their involvement in the US-Israel conflict with Tehran. This joint effort, known as ‘Operation Epic Fury,’ initiated on February 28, led to a significant escalation of tensions across the Middle East.
Despite the conflict, NATO allies like the UK and France have refrained from direct participation, advocating for peace due to global fuel shortages caused by the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. US officials have compiled a blueprint outlining NATO members’ contributions to the alliance, organizing countries into different tiers.
While the specifics of the list remain undisclosed, it seems to distinguish allies as either “naughty or nice,” according to a diplomat. However, European officials question the effectiveness of punitive actions against uncooperative allies, suggesting that such measures may predominantly impact the US.
President Trump has been vocal about potential repercussions for allies who do not comply with his directives, even hinting at a complete withdrawal from the alliance. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly emphasized the US commitment to its allies but noted the lack of reciprocal support during Operation Epic Fury.
The criteria for being on the ‘nice’ list are uncertain, although countries like Romania and Poland may receive favorable treatment for their backing. Poland covers most expenses related to hosting American troops, while Romania recently expanded an air base to assist the US military in the conflict with Iran.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously mentioned rewarding model allies like Israel, South Korea, Poland, and Germany for their contributions to collective defense. He also warned of consequences for allies failing to fulfill their defense obligations within NATO.
