Donald Trump has launched another verbal attack on Keir Starmer regarding the UK’s refusal to participate in joint strikes with the US and Israel against Iran. The US President, facing a decline in popularity, criticized the Prime Minister for not backing the military actions that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and other Tehran officials. Trump also reignited his feud with London Mayor, making unsubstantiated claims against him.
Expressing his disappointment in the UK’s stance, Trump mentioned, “He has not been helpful. I never thought I’d see that. I never thought I’d see that from the UK. We love the UK. This was the most solid relationship of all. And now we have very strong relationships with other countries in Europe.”
Following Labour’s poor performance in Gorton and Denton, Trump wished the PM luck in improving the situation, acknowledging the challenges he faces. Despite the UK’s refusal to participate in the strikes, Trump downplayed its significance, emphasizing the support from countries like France while criticizing the UK’s stance as different.
The disagreement escalated when the PM defended his decision not to allow US use of UK bases for initial strikes against Iran, leading to criticism from Trump. Eventually, the UK granted permission for the US to use British bases for defensive measures against Iran, but Trump expressed disappointment in the delay in the decision-making process.
In response, Sir Keir stated in a Commons statement, “President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest.”
