President Donald Trump has reportedly made a request to Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, causing a stir among Canadians amidst ongoing trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated that Trump personally contacted Apple regarding the renaming and hinted at a potential upcoming change to “Lake America.” The renaming initiative stems from an executive order signed by Trump following the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade talks and the imposition of significant U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. Despite the push for the name change, Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected it, affirming that the lake, situated between Ontario and New York state, will remain known as Lake Ontario. Google announced that Google Maps users in the United States would see the updated name, aligning with official government sources, while Canadian users would continue to see Lake Ontario. The issue caused some Canadian websites to display the name “Lake America” temporarily before reverting to the original designation. Apple has not yet responded to inquiries about the potential renaming on its maps. This move mirrors a previous executive order by Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, affecting federal documents and some media outlets that now refer to it as such. Apple Maps currently shows the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
