“Trump Seals Iran Ceasefire Deal, Doubts Loom”

Published on

Donald Trump has been characterized as actively seeking a way out of the tumultuous Iran war following the swift agreement on a two-week ceasefire. The U.S. president recently backed away from his previous threats towards Iran, opting for a deal aimed at halting hostilities for a limited period and reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz. This move was heralded as the start of a new era for the Middle East.

However, there are emerging doubts about the mutual understanding of the ceasefire terms by both Washington and Tehran, as conflicting claims over the control of the strategically crucial oil passageway have emerged. Notably, vessels are now expected to pay $1 million per passage through the strait.

In response to the agreement, Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer expressed relief that Trump seemed to be looking for a way out of his aggressive rhetoric. Meanwhile, liberal commentator Harry Sisson criticized Trump for seemingly giving Iran what they wanted in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which was operational before the conflict began.

Trump took to social media, particularly his Truth Social platform, to tout the ceasefire as a significant step towards global peace, emphasizing the potential for economic gains and reconstruction efforts in Iran. He expressed confidence that the situation would improve, likening it to a potential “Golden Age” for the Middle East.

Israel has voiced support for the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that it does not cover clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon, which continued despite the agreement. Pakistan, acting as a mediator, announced plans to initiate peace talks in Islamabad imminently.

Early reactions in the markets indicated a drop in brent crude prices below $100 for the first time in a week, reaching a low of $93. Concurrently, Pound Sterling strengthened against the dollar, climbing to $1.344 from a recent low of £1.318.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire terms to pave the way for a lasting peace in the region. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also welcomed the ceasefire, emphasizing the need for continued support to transform it into a sustainable agreement and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
