United States President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a significant tariff on Canada in the ongoing trade dispute. Taking to Truth Social on Thursday, January 29, Trump stated that a 50% tariff would be applied to all aircraft sold to the U.S. from Canada due to Canada’s refusal to certify several Gulfstream jets. This tariff threat followed another warning over the weekend to slap a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if it pursued a trade agreement with China.

Trump’s social media post accused Canada of unjustly and unlawfully denying certification for Gulfstream jets and declared that the U.S. would decertify Canada’s Bombardier Global Express aircraft until the certification issue was resolved. He alleged that Canada was obstructing the sale of Gulfstream products in the country by manipulating the certification process.

In his statement, Trump emphasized that unless the situation was rectified promptly, Canada would face a 50% tariff on all aircraft entering the United States. Notably, according to industry expert Richard Aboulafia, previous decisions on jet certifications had always been made by aviation safety professionals at the Federal Aviation Administration, making Trump’s move unprecedented.

Aboulafia criticized the use of aircraft safety as a tactic in a trade conflict, labeling it a detrimental strategy. This development marks the latest episode in the ongoing tensions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
