President Trump issued a firm statement on his Truth Social platform, vowing to take decisive action to eliminate Iran in response to recent strikes. The US president’s warning came after a series of exchanges between the US and Iran.
Trump expressed frustration over Iranian violations of the Cease Fire Agreement, stating that US aircraft had targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar facilities. He emphasized the possibility of resorting to military action to finish what was started successfully, asserting that the Islamic Republic of Iran would cease to exist if necessary.
The warning followed the US Central Command’s announcement of retaliatory strikes in response to an alleged Iranian attack on a commercial oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz using drones. The US military confirmed hitting 10 targets in Iran under President Trump’s direction in response to the provocation.
The US Central Command detailed the targets, including Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities. The strikes underscored the ongoing tensions in the region despite previous agreements between the US and Iran, highlighting the potential for further escalation.
The initial attack targeted the Panama-flagged tanker, M/T Kiku, carrying over two million barrels of crude oil near the strait. Subsequent strikes were carried out in response to another reported attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship, M/V Ever Lovely. The US military criticized Iran for disregarding the ceasefire agreement and escalating hostilities in the region.
While both nations had recently reached agreements aiming for peace, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remained volatile. Ongoing strikes disrupted normal shipping activities, impeding the full restoration of commercial traffic. Tehran had previously warned against unauthorized navigation in the strait, emphasizing the need for coordination with Iranian forces.
The continued tensions in the region highlight the challenges in maintaining peace agreements and ensuring maritime security in critical waterways.
