Trump to Inform NATO Allies of US Military Support Reduction

Published on

Insiders report that Donald Trump is set to inform NATO allies about the United States’ intention to reduce military support in significant crises.

According to three sources briefed on the matter, the US will diminish its available pool of military capabilities for European countries within the NATO alliance, as outlined in the NATO Force Model used for crisis scenarios and conflicts.

While the specific details of the forces involved are confidential, the Pentagon has reportedly decided to reduce its commitment significantly, as stated by anonymous sources.

President Trump’s stance is clear in expecting European nations to assume greater responsibility for their security, with the upcoming communication to allies signaling the implementation of this policy.

Although the timeline for transferring crisis-mode duties to European allies remains uncertain, sources indicate that the Pentagon is planning to announce its intent to reduce its commitment at a meeting of defense policy chiefs in Brussels on Friday.

Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s policy chief, has affirmed the US’s continued use of nuclear weapons to safeguard NATO members, while European allies are expected to lead in conventional forces.

The US representation at the meeting, likely to be Alex Velez-Green, a key aide to Colby, will focus on reshaping the NATO Force Model, a pivotal objective for Colby’s team ahead of the upcoming NATO leaders’ summit in Turkey this July, one of the sources revealed.

Mounting pressure on the NATO alliance has raised concerns among some European nations about a potential complete US withdrawal. The adjustment to the US’s wartime force availability is expected to amplify these apprehensions.

Recent announcements by the Trump administration to reduce troops in Europe, including canceling a planned deployment to Poland, have sparked criticism from US lawmakers.

Capitol Hill aides are reportedly aware of and uneasy about the Pentagon’s plans to narrow its commitments under the NATO Force Model, as stated by one source and another individual familiar with the situation.

Despite concerns, a senior NATO diplomat expressed confidence that the US would offer assistance to Europe in times of need.

President Trump and his aides have criticized European allies for inadequate military spending and dependence on the US for defense, highlighting the presence of thousands of US troops in Europe.

Tensions between the US and Europe have been further fueled by Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland and disagreements between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over international matters.

European allies argue that they are bolstering their military capabilities, albeit gradually, emphasizing the challenges of rapid military expansion.
