President Donald Trump has turned his attention to Cuba, issuing a warning to the country to negotiate with the US “before it’s too late.” Trump highlighted that the flow of oil and financial support from Venezuela, a historical ally of Cuba, would be halted. It is estimated that Cuba receives approximately 35,000 barrels of oil per day from Venezuela. The President’s ultimatum follows the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in a Caracas operation on January 3.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump emphasized Cuba’s reliance on Venezuelan oil and funds for many years. He mentioned that Cuba had provided “Security Services” to the previous two Venezuelan dictators in exchange. However, he asserted that this support would cease, stating, “THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO! I strongly recommend they come to an agreement, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”
No specific details were provided regarding the terms of a potential agreement or the repercussions Cuba might face. Cuba has been offering personal security to Maduro for an extended period, and the Cuban government reported the loss of 32 nationals during the recent operation. President Miguel Díaz-Canel hailed these individuals as “brave Cuban combatants” who would be remembered for confronting the assailants wearing imperial uniforms.
In a recent message, Trump lamented the casualties among the Cuban security personnel, noting that Venezuela no longer requires protection from those who had allegedly held them captive. He reassured that the US, possessing the most potent military globally, would safeguard Venezuela. The Cuban government has yet to issue a response to Trump’s latest warnings.
