“Trump’s Pearl Harbor Joke Stuns Japanese PM in White House Meeting”

Published on

In a recent meeting at the White House, President Donald Trump sparked a moment of awkward silence with a quip about Pearl Harbor in front of the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi. The event took a turn when a Japanese reporter questioned Trump about the lack of communication with US allies, including Japan, regarding the bombing of Iran.

Trump defended the secrecy of the operation, emphasizing the element of surprise. Attempting to lighten the mood, he made a jest about Japan’s familiarity with surprise tactics, referring to the historical event at Pearl Harbor. However, the room fell silent as Trump extended the joke, asking why Japan hadn’t informed him about the attack.

The meeting also saw Takaichi, Keir Starmer, and leaders from five other nations issuing a joint statement condemning Iranian attacks on shipping and energy facilities. The leaders expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and called on Iran to halt its aggressive actions in compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

Addressing the need for additional funding for military operations, Trump emphasized the volatile global situation and the importance of maintaining a strong military. He indicated a request for $200 billion for military purposes, stressing the necessity of congressional approval for emergency spending.

Regarding the potential deployment of ground troops to Iran, Trump dismissed the idea, asserting his authority to deploy military forces as he sees fit. He emphasized his independence in decision-making and strategic planning.

At the outset of the meeting, Takaichi voiced Japan’s opposition to Iran’s nuclear program and highlighted the country’s efforts to promote peace and stability. She presented a proposal to stabilize global energy markets amidst the ongoing conflict.

The discussion between Trump and Takaichi also touched on Japan’s support in the Iran war, with Trump acknowledging Japan’s commitment. Despite initial concerns about the meeting’s difficulty, the leaders exchanged positive remarks publicly, with Trump praising Takaichi before engaging in talks about Japan’s role in the conflict.
