Nick Reiner, accused of the murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. In a June filing, Reiner attempted to claim unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993.
Trustees declined Reiner’s request, citing California’s “slayer statute,” which prohibits individuals who have intentionally killed someone from inheriting money or property from the deceased. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele Reiner, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed at their California residence on December 14, 2025. Shortly after, their son Nick Reiner was arrested.
Facing murder charges, Reiner, aged 32, has pleaded not guilty. The indictment, revealed by a Los Angeles County grand jury, suggests that Reiner ambushed his parents before the attack, potentially leading to capital punishment. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not confirmed whether the death penalty will be pursued.
Scheduled for a pretrial hearing in September, Reiner is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. Apart from the family trust fund, individual trusts were set up for the Reiner children, with Nick Reiner supposed to receive half at 30 and the remainder at 35. However, he alleged in a petition that he never received the funds owed to him, emphasizing his right to a fair defense.
The trust fund, totaling at least $1.5 million US, became a point of contention. High-profile attorney Alan Jackson initially represented Reiner but departed without explanation. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later reversed their decision. Jackson expressed willingness to rejoin the case if funds were available.
Legal representatives overseeing the trust fund determined that fund distribution was pending the criminal case outcome against Reiner. The “slayer statute” principles and Probate Code Section 250 could impact Reiner’s access to the funds. Motives behind the killings remain undisclosed, with ongoing public interest in the case.
Jake Reiner shared his anguish over the tragedy in an April statement, highlighting the impact on the family. Rob Reiner, known for his iconic films like “The Princess Bride” and “A Few Good Men,” had a successful career in Hollywood. His marriage to Michele, sparked by their meeting during “When Harry Met Sally” filming, lasted 36 years.
