A governor in Turkey, Mehmet Fatih Cicekli, was dismissed following backlash over photos showing him wearing cycling tights during a public event. The dismissal, which came through a presidential decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 17, followed criticism from Turkish politicians who deemed the attire inappropriate for a governor.

Inan Akgun Alp, a member of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, accused Mr Cicekli of prioritizing social media over official duties and criticized his choice of clothing. Samil Tayyar, from Erdogan’s ruling party, argued that the governor’s attire went against cultural norms in a traditional province like Ardahan.

Mr Cicekli defended himself by stating that the cycling outfit was standard sportswear. Despite facing criticism, a petition with over 10,000 signatures has been raised in support of reinstating him, highlighting his contributions to promoting sports and youth activities.

In an emotional farewell to his supporters in Ardahan, Mr Cicekli expressed gratitude for their ongoing support. The European Parliament member Nacho Sanchez Amor also voiced support for Mr Cicekli, suggesting that the criticism was politically motivated.

As he departed the province, Mr Cicekli was greeted by local cyclists showing their solidarity.
