“Turning Point: Overcoming Weight Struggles with PCOS”

Published on

My weight struggles have been a lifelong battle, but a pivotal conversation with my doctor sparked a change in my mindset. Previously resigned to a lifetime of excess weight, I had faced failed attempts at weight loss due to lack of mental fortitude, dislike for exercise, and a penchant for carb and cheese-laden meals.

Weight loss proved challenging, especially for someone with a long history of being overweight like myself. Despite past unsuccessful attempts at dieting, a turning point came in 2022 when diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition affecting various bodily functions, including insulin regulation.

Following a six-month diet regimen post-diagnosis, a crucial wake-up call in August 2025 prompted my enrollment in a 12-week online weight loss program. At my heaviest of 106.7kg (16st 12lb), I realized the urgency to shed excess weight to address health concerns, eventually achieving a weight of 87kg (13st 9lb) after nine months.

Embracing a new approach to eating, tailored to my PCOS and insulin sensitivity, involved a shift towards balanced meals with moderated carbohydrate intake, focusing on whole grains and protein. Straying from calorie counting, I adopted a sustainable lifestyle change rather than a restrictive diet, ensuring long-term adherence.

Incorporating physical activity into my routine, despite initial reluctance, proved beneficial. Starting with light exercises like post-dinner walks, I gradually transitioned to aerobic classes and kettlebell workouts, acknowledging the value of any form of movement for overall well-being.

Revamping my beverage choices, I prioritized hydration with flavored water options while limiting sugary drinks to occasional indulgences. By reframing setbacks as part of the journey and allowing flexibility in my lifestyle, I’ve found a sustainable balance between health goals and enjoying life.
