Martin Roberts recently shared his harrowing experience of almost losing his eyesight while tending to his garden. In 2019, the popular presenter of “Homes Under the Hammer” had to be rushed to the hospital after a routine gardening task went awry. Roberts was trimming a plant in his garden when he unknowingly came into contact with a hazardous substance. The plant’s sap caused his eyes to swell, water profusely, and become excruciatingly painful.

The incident was featured on Channel 5’s “Garden Makeovers from Hell,” where Roberts detailed the events leading up to his eye injury. Not realizing the potential danger, he mentioned observing a peculiar white sap oozing from the plant’s stems as he pruned them. Unfortunately, he unknowingly transferred the sap to his eyes, triggering severe discomfort within minutes.

Upon researching the plant online, Roberts identified it as euphorbia, also known as spurge, which secretes a toxic milky sap capable of causing skin, mouth, and eye irritation. The Poison Control website warns that exposure to euphorbia sap can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, mouth swelling, eye redness, irritation, blurred vision, and even temporary or permanent blindness.

After seeking medical help, Roberts documented his ordeal from the hospital, cautioning others about the plant’s hazardous effects. He described the urgency with which medical staff flushed his eyes with water to mitigate potential permanent damage. Although his eyesight has partially recovered, Roberts continues to experience dry eyes, necessitating frequent eye drops.

Reflecting on the incident, Roberts emphasized the seriousness of underestimating the dangers posed by seemingly harmless plants. He stressed the life-altering impact of the incident and how it has reshaped his perspective on gardening.
