A police officer using a false identity engaged in a relationship with a TV presenter who was later revealed to have another family, according to a misconduct panel. The panel determined that PC Ian Steel, who resigned prior to the verdict, had misled Jackie Adedeji, 31, for over two years, exploiting her for his own motives. Adedeji, known for her work on investigative TV show “Untold,” spoke out, expressing relief and empowerment after the ordeal.
The incident came to light during a hearing conducted by City of London Police, where Steel had been stationed before his resignation. Adedeji met Steel in 2016, when she was 22, and he was 38, living with his partner and child. Operating under the alias “Danny Stevens,” a fabricated persona as an undercover officer without a family, Steel maintained the ruse throughout their relationship until its end in 2021.
Despite Steel’s denial of certain allegations, all claims against him were substantiated, resulting in his placement on the police barred list. Adedeji, who chose to go public with her identity, reported the misconduct to the Independent Office for Police Conduct years ago, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against injustice.
Encouraging others to share their experiences and seek justice, Adedeji highlighted the significance of breaking the silence to facilitate healing. City of London Police’s Ch Supt Sanjay Andersen acknowledged the arduous process Adedeji went through and commended her bravery in coming forward, reaffirming the commitment to upholding high standards of conduct within the police force.
