“U.K., Canada, France Ban Trade with Israeli Settlers”

In a crowded British Parliament session on Tuesday, Members of Parliament convened to hear the government redefine its ties with Israel. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, flanked by his cabinet colleagues, including the newly appointed Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who is of Jewish descent, attentively absorbed the announcement banning trade with settlers from the occupied West Bank. Miliband disclosed that Canada and France would also implement similar measures.

Miliband declared, “Today, France and Canada are joining Britain in prohibiting the import of products from illegal settlements.” The announcement was met with enthusiastic cheers in the parliamentary hall. Miliband highlighted that the collective stance against Israel’s expansion of settlements in the West Bank was not exclusive to the three countries mentioned.

Furthermore, Miliband outlined that the U.K. would take actions against specific entities and individuals involved in facilitating settlement expansion through services such as construction, infrastructure, financing, or real estate. This decision was prompted by Israel’s recent move to open tenders for constructing 1,200 settler homes in the E1 area of the West Bank, crossing what Miliband referred to as a significant “red line.”

The United Nations and numerous countries consider the settlements illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention’s Article 49 concerning military occupations, a stance rejected by Israel, which views the territory as disputed rather than occupied. The joint recognition of the state of Palestine by Canada, the U.K., and France a year ago set the stage for the recent actions.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to Israel’s security while advocating for the coexistence of a secure Israel alongside a safe Palestine. Emphasizing the importance of preserving a two-state solution for regional peace and security, the leaders highlighted the necessity of additional measures in response to Israel’s settlement expansion and escalating violence in the West Bank.

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar denounced the British Foreign Secretary’s statements as “outrageous lies” and promptly ordered the closure of the U.K.’s consulate in East Jerusalem. Additionally, Israel announced the expulsion of British representatives from a joint military monitoring center in Gaza and the discontinuation of U.K. training for Palestinian security forces.

Jewish leaders in Canada and Britain expressed disapproval of the sanctions imposed by the U.K., Canada, France, and other European nations. The actions were criticized for potentially appeasing extreme factions and endangering communal security. Amid escalating tensions, the U.K.’s relations with Israel witnessed a significant shift, evident since Prime Minister Burnham’s apology for the Labour Party’s initial response to Israeli military actions in Gaza earlier this year.

The official Palestinian news agency welcomed the decisive actions taken by the countries, condemning Israeli settlements as a blatant violation of international law. In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio refrained from commenting on the joint measures but indicated the U.S. administration’s differing approach from the U.K.’s stance.

The evolving dynamics in the U.K.’s engagement with Israel had been foreshadowed by Burnham’s earlier statements signaling a recalibration of relations with Israel. With the recent developments, the U.K.’s position on settlements in the West Bank has garnered international attention and reactions from various stakeholders.
