“UK Airports Expand eGate Access for Families with Kids”

Published on

Starting July 8, a significant change in security rules at over a dozen UK airports will impact families traveling with primary school-aged children. The UK Government recently announced an expansion of eGate access, allowing children aged eight and nine, at least 120cm tall, and accompanied by an adult to benefit from faster processing. This adjustment aims to enhance the travel experience for families returning from holidays, with eGate use typically taking only a few minutes.

The modification to the age threshold is expected to ease congestion at passport control, as more passengers, including children under 10, now have access to eGates. To utilize eGates, passengers must have a biometric symbol on their passport cover and meet specific height requirements.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, emphasized the aim to alleviate stress for parents traveling with young children by expanding eGate access, ensuring a smoother journey during the busy summer holiday season. Border Force Director General, Phil Douglas, highlighted the importance of eGates in maintaining border security while enhancing efficiency for families.

Karen Dee, Chief Executive of AirportsUK, praised the development for enabling more families to benefit from streamlined border processes, reducing wait times. Since their introduction in 2008, ePassport gates have evolved to accommodate travelers from various countries, enhancing the overall airport experience for visitors and returning residents.
