The downpour, associated with a low-pressure system, is set to intensify by late afternoon as it moves eastward.

A weather warning for rain is in effect until 10 pm covering regions such as London, Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, and West Sussex. Brighton, which typically receives about 75mm of rain in January, could experience up to 50mm today, posing a risk of flooding. Residents in at-risk areas, including Brighton, are advised to prepare an emergency kit containing essential items like insurance documents, contact numbers, a flashlight with spare batteries, and any necessary medications.

Southampton, also under the warning, typically records around 90mm of rain in January, but today’s forecast suggests nearly half of that amount. The Met Office alerts of an approaching low-pressure system bringing persistent and heavy rain across England, potentially leading to surface water flooding due to already saturated ground.

Recent rainfall events, including 15mm in Port Ellen, Argyll and Bute, have triggered flood warnings along the River Severn in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Flood alerts are also issued for areas near London, with concerns for rivers like Mole, Wid, and Can. The Midlands, particularly Warwickshire and Oxfordshire, are expected to face wet conditions as well.

Looking ahead, the weekend remains unsettled according to the Met Office, with wind and rain clearing on Friday followed by sunshine and showers. Showers are likely on Saturday, but Sunday could see drier conditions with temperatures around average and possible overnight fog in some areas.
