“UK Braces for March Blizzard: Snow Accumulation Expected”

Published on

The UK is bracing for the return of snow within a few days, with the possibility of several inches accumulating in various regions.

Recently released weather maps are indicating an unexpected March blizzard for Brits, with major cities likely to be affected. According to the GFS weather model, snowfall is forecasted to start in Northern Ireland, Wales, northern England, and Scotland around 9pm on March 16.

The most intense snow showers are anticipated in the north-west of England and Scotland. Cities such as Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Edinburgh are expected to witness snow around this time.

The snowfall is likely to persist for several hours, while heavy rain is expected in southern parts of the country. By midnight, the maps show snow covering the Pennines and the north-east of England.

Although the intensity of snowfall is projected to decrease by 9am, Manchester may still be impacted by flurries. Additionally, further snowfall is anticipated in Northern Ireland and Scotland during this period, as indicated by the maps.

Snow coverage maps indicate that by 6am on March 17, all of Northern Ireland and Scotland are expected to have snow accumulation on the ground. Most of northern England and Wales are also likely to experience snow cover, with the possibility of some snow reaching the Midlands.

Data suggests that hills in Scotland could see up to 27cm (11 inches) of snow accumulation. Northern England is forecasted to receive around 4cm (1.5 inches), while other areas may expect no more than 1-2cm of snowfall.

The Met Office also predicts the possibility of snowfall this month, with wintry showers likely to be confined to hills in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In its forecast for March 7 to March 16, the Met Office states: “Heading into the second week of March, high pressure is expected to dominate, particularly towards the south and southeast of the UK.

“This means that many regions will experience dry weather with varying cloud cover and some sunshine, with the sunniest weather likely in the south or southeast. There is a possibility of overnight fog due to clear skies and light winds.

“However, frontal systems are expected to impact the north and west of the UK at times, potentially moving further east occasionally. This could result in rain, strong winds, and potential hill snow in the highest areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures are likely to be around or above normal, although some frosty nights may still occur.”
