“UK Braces for March Blizzard: Snow Forecast Across Major Cities”

Published on

Meteorological winter is coming to an end soon, but the possibility of more snow remains in the forecast. Advanced weather models are indicating the potential for a blizzard to affect various parts of the UK as March begins, bringing snowfall to major cities.

According to the GFS weather model, snow is expected to start falling in Scotland, northern England, and North Wales around 9pm on March 5. Glasgow may see the initial snowfall in Scotland, while snow in England and Wales is anticipated mainly in hilly areas.

The blizzard is projected to move southwards, potentially reaching densely populated areas. By 6am on March 6, snowfall is predicted in Newcastle and parts of Yorkshire, including Leeds. Subsequently, by 9am, Manchester could also experience some snow flurries. Snow coverage maps indicate a significant portion of northern England and Scotland will be under snow by 3pm, with accumulations generally not exceeding 1-2cm except in elevated regions.

The Met Office’s forecast for the end of February to early March hints at the possibility of snow, particularly in northern highland areas. The forecast also mentions variable weather conditions across most regions, with occasional drier and brighter intervals.

Regarding precipitation, the Met Office expects heavier rainfall in the north-west at the beginning of March, accompanied by potentially strong winds and a risk of gales. Temperature-wise, conditions are likely to be around average or slightly above.

Meanwhile, the BBC’s outlook for the start of March suggests a lower likelihood of snow. From March 2 to 15, the forecast indicates the potential for high pressure near the UK, leading to relatively dry conditions with precipitation levels expected to be near or below average. The forecast also mentions the influence of high pressure on both precipitation and wind patterns, with the possibility of frost and fog in early March.

Daytime temperatures are forecasted to be near seasonal norms for most regions, with a chance of above-average temperatures, although Scotland might experience chillier conditions. There is a small probability of high-pressure systems developing at higher latitudes, which could bring colder weather but not extreme cold anomalies, potentially leading to wintry showers.
