“UK Braces for Severe Heatwave, Health Alerts Raised”

Published on

Britons are bracing for an impending heatwave that is set to commence within hours and extend through the upcoming week, as cautioned by the UK government. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has raised amber health alerts for the heatwave, which is anticipated to be more severe than the previous one in May. London, the south-east, south-west, and east of England are areas where millions of residents are covered by the health alerts, effective from Thursday afternoon until 8 pm on Tuesday, June 23.

The amber alert indicates the potential for significant impacts on health and social care services due to the soaring temperatures, posing a higher risk of fatalities, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or with underlying health issues. Younger age groups may also face adverse effects, as highlighted by the agency. Moreover, workforce efficiency in the affected regions could be compromised due to the escalating temperatures, expected to reach the mid-30s. Additionally, the east and west midlands are under yellow health alerts for heat, suggesting possible service disruptions due to the extreme heat.

Government warnings align with meteorologists’ predictions of an incoming high-pressure system that will elevate temperatures well above the June average across much of the country. Temperatures are forecasted to widely climb into the high 20s Celsius, with projections of reaching 32°C in southern England on Sunday and potentially exceeding 34°C on Monday. The prevailing humid conditions are likely to persist as the heat intensifies, raising the likelihood of thunderstorms.

Meteorologist Honor Criswick noted the heightened humidity levels during this heatwave compared to the previous one, which could result in increased discomfort for individuals. The moisture in the air also raises the possibility of thunderstorm development, particularly in central and southern parts of England. The duration of the heatwave remains uncertain, but it is expected to extend through the weekend and at least into the early days of the following week.

In a record-breaking heatwave last month, May 26 witnessed the hottest May day ever recorded in England and Wales, with temperatures soaring to 35.1°C at Kew Gardens and 32.9°C at Cardiff Bute Park. The Met Office defines a heatwave as three consecutive days with maximum temperatures meeting or surpassing the heatwave threshold.

UKHSA heat health alerts also highlight the risks of water-related incidents, including cold-water shock and drowning. Following a tragic toll of 19 fatalities in water-related incidents during the previous heatwave, a campaign titled ‘Save Lives for Sam’ was launched by the Mirror to address the issue and prevent further deaths among children.

As individuals plan visits to the coast in the upcoming days, they are advised to be cautious of lower sea-surface temperatures compared to mid-summer levels, which could lead to cold water shock. National Water Safety Partner at the RNLI, Samantha Hughes, emphasized the importance of water safety measures, such as remaining calm in the water and seeking lifeguarded beaches for swimming. In case of a coastal emergency, contacting the coastguard via 999 is recommended.
