The United Kingdom is preparing for an upcoming severe winter event as new weather maps indicate a significant Atlantic storm is set to impact the nation with snow, heavy rain, and strong winds, affecting only a few areas.

The latest forecast data from WXCharts shows a swiftly approaching storm originating from the Atlantic on Tuesday, January 27, at 6 pm. The map displays widespread snowfall across various parts of the UK, represented by blue and purple shading, while green and yellow bands indicate heavy rainfall.

Regions such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and parts of the Midlands are expected to experience heavy snowfall, particularly in higher elevations. Wales, central and southern England, including London and the South East, will face persistent heavy rain with occasional wintry showers.

A second map for the same time slot on January 27 highlights areas in the UK with powerful winds, depicted in shades of orange and red. Coastal areas of Ireland, western Scotland, and northwest England are forecasted to experience intense winds exceeding 100mph.

Much of England and Wales will be impacted by strong winds ranging from 70mph to 90mph, even inland areas. The most concerning aspect is the potential for gusts reaching 110mph over the Atlantic, although they are expected to weaken before reaching land.

While the storm’s impact will be widespread, only around 10 counties, mainly in southwest England and west Wales, are anticipated to be spared from the worst weather conditions.

The Met Office’s extended forecast covering January 24 to February 2 predicts that the UK will continue to be influenced by Atlantic weather systems, leading to periods of heavy rain and showers, especially in the south and west. Colder conditions may bring snow, particularly in Scotland and northern England.

Regarding long-term forecasts, the Met Office warns about the unpredictable nature of weather patterns beyond five days and how minor events in the Atlantic can significantly affect the UK and Ireland’s weather in the days ahead.
