“UK Braces for Snow: Met Office Warns of Wintry Conditions”

Published on

Britons in various regions across the country are being advised to dress warmly as the Met Office has pinpointed the areas expected to be hit by snow in the coming hours.

After enduring heavy rain and strong winds, the UK is now bracing for a drop in temperatures as a low-pressure system moves in from the north-west. National weather experts have forecasted that a band of rain moving from the west will collide with Arctic air, triggering wintry conditions before Monday morning.

The Met Office has warned that while many areas will see “blustery showers,” those in the northern regions and at higher altitudes will face the most extreme weather conditions.

According to maps, certain areas could witness temperatures plummeting to a chilling -2°C overnight. Meteorologists anticipate that the most affected areas will be in the north of the country, particularly on elevated terrain, as reported by the Express.

Met Office forecaster Annie Shuttleworth mentioned, “Showers will move in across northwestern areas during the day, although they won’t be as frequent as yesterday, still posing a risk of snow above approximately 400m.”

“From the west, wet and windy weather will spread, bringing overcast skies across much of western regions in the UK, including Wales and the Midlands. While there might be a touch of frost in the far east on Sunday morning, milder and cloudier conditions are expected to replace that frost quickly,” she added.

This sudden cold spell follows just a week after parts of England experienced spring-like weather with temperatures reaching 19°C. Meteorologists attribute this abrupt change to a cold blast over North America intensifying the jet stream, ushering in frigid Arctic air from across the Atlantic.

Based on the latest Met Office forecasts and weather charts, certain areas are at a higher risk of snowfall, primarily in elevated locations. The Met Office’s prediction for Saturday evening and tonight highlights the Scottish Highlands, mentioning, “Showers will diminish with clear spells and frost forming in the east. Cloud cover will increase from the west with rain showers, possibly turning into snow on hills, moving eastward overnight. Southerly winds will strengthen. Minimum temperature -1°C.”

For Sunday, the forecast indicates, “Cloudy with intermittent heavy rain clearing eastward early in the day followed by sunny intervals and heavy showers, potentially thundery, with snow on higher terrain. Strong southerly winds, with coastal gales, shifting to southwesterly. Maximum temperature 8°C.”

Meanwhile, the prediction for the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday states, “Turning wet and windy soon. Rain will move away to the southeast later in the afternoon, giving way to heavy, squally showers that may turn into snow over elevated areas. Wind chill will make it feel cold. Maximum temperature 11°C.”
