Strong winds and snow are set to affect various parts of the UK in the upcoming days, potentially causing travel disruptions, as forecasters have cautioned. A yellow weather warning is currently active in certain areas of Scotland due to the development of strengthening winds across the nation. The alert from the Met Office is specifically for northern and western Scotland, where gusts may reach up to 80mph (130km/h) in exposed locations.
This weather warning is in effect until 12pm GMT, with widespread gusts of 65-70mph (105-110km/h) anticipated in the affected regions. There is also a slight possibility of certain areas experiencing brief wind speeds of up to 80mph. The strongest winds are expected to first impact the Outer and Inner Hebrides before spreading eastwards, with northern mainland Scotland and Orkney likely to face the strongest gusts later in the day.
As the winds heighten, there is a risk of travel disruption in the affected regions. The Met Office has advised that ferry services might be canceled, flights delayed, and bridges could impose restrictions on high-sided vehicles due to the blustery conditions evolving.
Despite the strong winds, much of the UK is forecasted to have dry and sunny weather on Wednesday. Conversely, Scotland is expected to witness more unsettled conditions with frequent showers throughout the day.
By Thursday, the intense winds in western Scotland are predicted to ease, but blustery conditions will become more prevalent across the rest of the UK. A significant portion of the country may experience gusts ranging from 40 to 50mph (65-80km/h), while western coasts of England and Wales could see winds of around 60mph (97km/h), and northern and western Scotland may still face gusts up to 65mph (105km/h).
The turbulent weather patterns are a result of a deepening low-pressure system positioned between Scotland and Iceland, generating strong westerly winds and gales as it progresses across the region. Forecasters are closely monitoring conditions as another deep low-pressure system is expected to pass south of Iceland during the weekend, potentially bringing additional blustery conditions to the UK.
Starting from Friday, a northwesterly wind is projected to usher in colder air from the Arctic region, causing temperatures to plummet around three to four degrees below average. Coupled with the strong winds, conditions could feel notably colder nationwide.
Quick-moving hail showers could develop in various regions, with brief spells of wet snow possible in almost any area, including parts of southern England. However, substantial snow accumulation is anticipated mainly in mountainous and higher regions of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, with some snowfall possible on higher ground in Wales and southwest England.
There is a chance of further wintry showers over the weekend, with Sunday’s conditions possibly remaining unsettled.
