Over 20 celebrities, ranging from Nicola Coughlan of Derry Girls and Bridgerton to music stars like Paloma Faith and Charlotte Church, have contributed various items to the online Scholarships for Gaza auction organized by the Phoenix Space charity. This initiative, running for 10 days starting July 27, aims to raise funds for Palestinian students.
In recent news, the UK government confirmed its commitment to assisting Palestinian students from Gaza in pursuing studies at renowned UK universities. To qualify for this support, students must secure full scholarships or self-fund their tuition. Last academic year, over 100 students were evacuated from Gaza to pursue education in the UK.
The Scholarships for Gaza auction has garnered support from 23 celebrities representing sports, music, and film industries. Notably, Mohammed Hasanain, 22, has been offered a place to study business and management at the University of Glasgow but requires financial assistance. His brother Mahmoud, 20, was previously evacuated from Gaza for studies in the UK, with hopes of reuniting in 2026.
Lineker, the host of The Rest is Football, donated a signed football shirt from his time in Japan, while Cox, known for his performances in Succession and Braveheart, offered a collection of memorabilia. Additionally, Charlotte Church contributed a wellness retreat stay, and Coughlan and McSweeney from Derry Girls donated a signed photo from the show’s set.
The auction also featured songwriter Paloma Faith, who provided a signed book to show solidarity with mothers in Gaza. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has severely impacted its educational infrastructure, with UNESCO reporting extensive damage to higher education facilities and workforce.
UNESCO emphasizes the importance of rebuilding higher education in Gaza to restore hope and opportunity for the younger generation. The estimated cost to repair all educational settings in Gaza exceeds £280 million ($373 million).
