A targeted vaccination effort is underway for individuals connected to the recent meningitis outbreak in Kent. Health Secretary Wes Streeting is considering extending vaccinations to older teenagers nationwide following the unprecedented outbreak that has resulted in two fatalities and at least 11 severe illnesses. Cases of meningitis B have been confirmed, a disease not covered by childhood vaccinations before 2015.

Streeting informed the House of Commons about the current situation, reporting four confirmed cases of group B meningococcal disease with 11 more cases under investigation. The fatalities and most cases are linked to the Club Chemistry nightclub on specific dates in March. Visitors to the club during that time have been advised to seek preventative antibiotic treatment as a precaution.

The Health Secretary emphasized that the bacteria can be transmitted through close and prolonged contact, such as kissing or sharing drinks. He highlighted the importance of understanding how the disease spreads to reassure the public. Streeting intends to ask the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation to reassess the eligibility for meningitis B vaccines for older children through the NHS.

An overview of the infection timeline revealed that 700 antibiotic doses have already been administered. Contact tracing began on March 13 when the first case was reported, and subsequent cases were identified through hospitals and universities. Local schools have reported meningitis cases, with one fatality identified as a Year 13 student named Juliette.

Addressing the Commons, Helen Whately MP shared a tribute to Juliette and raised concerns about the risk to schoolchildren and university students mixing in crowded venues. Streeting emphasized the need to identify and provide health information to young people who may have been exposed at the nightclub event.
