“UK Cracks Down on High Street Money Laundering”

Dodgy businesses on the high street, where an estimated £1 billion is laundered annually, will be targeted in a significant crackdown by law enforcement, announced Shabana Mahmood. The Home Secretary highlighted that establishments such as mini-marts, barber shops, vape stores, and sweet shops suspected of having ties to organized crime will be under scrutiny. Additional funding has been allocated to intensify raids and combat illicit financial activities, as criminals operate openly within these businesses.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) is set to establish a new unit with a budget of £20 million, while trading standards will receive an extra £6 million to identify illegitimate businesses. Mahmood emphasized the exploitation of high streets by criminal groups to launder money and harm legitimate enterprises, stating that a nationwide crackdown is underway to shut down these operations, seize illicit funds, and dismantle organized crime networks.

A newly formed High Street Organized Crime Unit will collaborate with police, government departments, and trading standards teams to enhance response times. The NCA estimates that £1 billion is laundered through high street businesses yearly, with connections to counterfeit goods, tax evasion, illegal labor, and drug trafficking. To bolster intelligence gathering, 75 new police roles will be created.

Sal Melki, the NCA’s deputy director of illicit finance, revealed that £10 million has been confiscated and 950 arrests made in connection to high street crime over the past 18 months. Lord Bichard, chair of National Trading Standards, warned about the detrimental impact of organized high street crime, including the sale of illicit goods that harm communities and legitimate businesses.

A £30 million funding package includes allocations for immigration enforcement, HMRC, and the High Street Organized Crime Unit, which operates under the Home Office. Ed Woodhall, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, commended the government’s initiative to support responsible retailers and crack down on organized crime syndicates that fuel illicit trade, addressing concerns raised by local shops.
