British Defence Secretary John Healey has not dismissed concerns regarding the potential escalation of the UK’s involvement in the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. During a visit to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, Healey had to seek shelter twice due to alerts of possible threats. He emphasized the unpredictability of conflicts and stressed the reinforcement of UK defenses.
While at RAF Akrotiri, Healey highlighted the ongoing tensions, referencing an Iran-backed drone attack. The base was put on high alert with multiple air raid sirens sounding off during his visit. Reflecting on the situation, Healey mentioned his imminent participation in an online COBRA meeting when the alert was triggered, underscoring the indiscriminate threat posed by Iran.
The challenge faced by Akrotiri lies in detecting small drones that evade radar systems, especially those flying at low altitudes over water. Healey confirmed the deployment of additional forces to enhance the base’s security against potential attacks orchestrated by Iran or its allies.
Amid uncertainties surrounding the origin of the drone attack, investigators are grappling with tracking smaller drones deployed by groups linked to the Iranian regime. More troops, including specialists in air surveillance, have been dispatched to bolster defense capabilities at RAF Akrotiri.
Responding to concerns from the public, Healey assured that measures have been taken to safeguard British personnel stationed in Cyprus and other regions in the Middle East. He acknowledged the worries of UK citizens and emphasized the commitment to protecting against indiscriminate attacks originating from Iran.
