Keir Starmer faces a significant setback as both the Secretary of Defence, John Healey, and Armed Forces minister, Al Carns, have resigned from their positions.
The departure of Mr. Healey has caused turmoil within the Ministry of Defence, leading to additional resignations from ministerial aides Pamela Nash and Rachel Hopkins.
The resignations were triggered by a funding dispute, with the former Defence Secretary accusing the Prime Minister of failing to challenge the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate necessary funds for national defense. A contentious debate has ensued regarding the delayed Defense Investment Plan (DIP).
In his resignation letter, Mr. Healey expressed disappointment in the inadequacy of the proposed plan for defense during these precarious times.
Meanwhile, Mr. Carns, a former Royal Marine, criticized the insufficient defense funding and government inefficiencies, particularly citing long delays in the DIP.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Carns emphasized the importance of providing proper equipment and support to soldiers, highlighting the country’s obligation to those who serve.
Following Mr. Healey’s resignation, Dan Jarvis, an Army veteran with experience in various conflict zones, has been appointed as the new Defence Secretary.
