UK diplomatic personnel and their families have been relocated from Tel Aviv to another spot in Israel, as indicated by the Foreign Office due to escalating security concerns in the Middle East region. In the meantime, British nationals have been cautioned to refrain from non-essential travel to Israel.
The action follows the temporary withdrawal of Foreign Office staff from Iran amidst the looming threat of US strikes against the country. An official travel advisory update stated, “Due to the ongoing security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw UK staff from Iran.”
The British embassy, which was shut down in mid-January, is said to be operating remotely. Prime Minister Keir Starmer mentioned that the UK’s focus is on facilitating the political dialogue between the US and Iran, especially as Donald Trump readies for a significant missile strike on Iran.
Reports have surfaced that Number 10 rejected a request from Trump to utilize the Diego Garcia base in the Chagos Islands for any potential military operations against Iran, citing concerns of breaching international law.
Trump recently gave Iran a deadline of 10 to 15 days to negotiate a “meaningful deal” to halt all nuclear technology advancements, which he alleges Iran is still pursuing despite previous Israeli-US strikes on critical facilities. Although high-level discussions have been held between US and Iranian representatives in Geneva, no major breakthroughs have been achieved to prevent conflict so far.
There have been notable movements of US cargo planes, fighter jets, and refuelling tankers towards the region in recent weeks, alongside the relocation of a second aircraft carrier across the Mediterranean. The massive USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier departed from Crete and is anticipated to reach the Israeli coast soon, potentially for a weekend offensive against Iran.
During his State of the Union address, Trump conveyed a message to Tehran’s leadership emphasizing his preference for a diplomatic resolution but asserting his unwavering stance against Iran possessing nuclear capabilities.
