UK Faces Record-Breaking Heatwave: 38C Forecast

Published on

An extreme heat alert has been extended as the United Kingdom prepares for a heatwave that may push temperatures to a record 38C high. The Met Office has indicated that the intense heatwave could persist until at least Thursday, triggering weather advisories, health warnings, and concerns for at-risk individuals.

Meteorologists are increasingly confident that this week could surpass the highest June temperature record of 35.6C, established in 1976 in Southampton. The Met Office has upgraded the amber extreme heat warning to cover Monday through Thursday.

The warning highlights potential health risks due to the heat and a potential rise in water-related incidents. Southern England, central and eastern Wales, and much of the Midlands are under the alert for Monday and Tuesday, while Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, and Cheshire are included for Wednesday and Thursday.

Residents in the warned areas are urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and refrain from outdoor exercise between 11am and 3pm. Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued separate amber heat health alerts covering most of England from Monday morning to Friday night, along with a yellow heat alert for northeast England during the same period.

Meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey emphasized the importance of water safety, particularly for coastal and inland water areas, to prevent cold water shock incidents. Meanwhile, Europe is also experiencing scorching temperatures with Rome expecting 37C and Madrid 39C on Monday. France anticipates highs of 40C with emergency services and military forces on high alert for wildfires.

The escalating climate crisis is leading to more frequent extreme weather events globally, such as heatwaves, floods, droughts, and storms. A recent Met Office report forecasts that between 2026 and 2030, there is an 86% chance of a hotter year than the current warmest year on record, 2024. Additionally, there is a 91% chance that global temperatures will surpass 1.5C above pre-industrial levels in the next five years.
