A specially chartered plane by the UK Government for the return of British citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship will include testing kits and oxygen supplies for potential medical emergencies. Currently, 22 Brits remain on the ship, which has experienced an outbreak of hantavirus. Two individuals have already been evacuated from the vessel. Among the seven passengers who disembarked at St Helena, two are self-isolating in the UK, four in St Helena, and the seventh is currently self-isolating in an undisclosed country.
Upon their return to the UK, the Brits will be required to self-isolate either at their homes or in alternative accommodations based on individual circumstances. Consular teams are in regular communication with the remaining passengers, providing them with updates on the travel arrangements and post-arrival procedures.
A third British national is suspected of having contracted hantavirus during the MV Hondius cruise. The ship, carrying approximately 140 passengers and crew, is en route to the Canary Islands, where it is expected to arrive early on Sunday and be placed in a strictly isolated area, according to the Spanish Government.
Following the ship’s arrival, approximately 24 British passengers will be repatriated by a UK Government-chartered plane, while the US is also arranging for the return of its 17 citizens from the cruise ship. The World Health Organization has emphasized that the risk to the general public from the outbreak remains low.
As the situation unfolds, health authorities are investigating potential contacts of the affected passengers. While no symptoms are currently reported among the remaining British passengers, they will be asked to self-isolate upon their return. Passenger Martin Anstee, along with two other Brits, has already begun self-isolating voluntarily at home as a precaution.
Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contaminated rodent droppings and is not easily spread between individuals. Health officials are monitoring passengers who disembarked the ship earlier in the voyage, as the source of the infection is believed to be linked to a stop in Argentina. The cruise ship outbreak has led to five confirmed cases, including fatalities, with efforts ongoing to trace potential contacts worldwide.
