“UK Infants at Risk: Toxin Poisoning from Baby Formula”

Published on

The UK Health Security Agency has reported 36 clinical cases of children showing symptoms consistent with toxin poisoning related to recent baby formula recalls. According to UKHSA, they, along with partner agencies, have been notified of 24 cases in England, seven in Scotland, three in Wales, one in Northern Ireland, and one from the Crown Dependencies, where children who consumed affected batches exhibited symptoms indicative of cereulide toxin poisoning.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) issued multiple recalls of infant formula products this year due to concerns about toxin poisoning. Nestle initiated a precautionary recall of several batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula in the UK on January 5 after the possible presence of the cereulide toxin was identified. The recall was later updated with new product expiry dates on January 9. The toxin can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps if ingested.

On January 24, Danone, another infant formula retailer, recalled a batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula due to cereulide contamination. A new batch of Nestlé baby formula was recently added to a product recall list after the discovery of a food poisoning toxin, specifically arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, an essential ingredient for infant development added to formula for non-breastfed babies.

The latest batch subject to recall is 800g packs of SMA Advanced First Infant Milk with a best before date of December 2027 and marked 53390346AB, distributed only in Northern Ireland. Nestlé stated that while there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses linked to the products, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure.

The FSA revealed that the contamination leading to both recalls stemmed from a shared third-party ingredient supplier. They advised individuals with affected products to discontinue use, switch to alternatives, and seek medical advice if their baby has consumed the formula. Parents should consult a pharmacist or doctor before switching if the formula is prescribed. Further details on the recalled batches are available on food.gov.uk.

The issue was attributed to an ingredient supplied by a major supplier. Jane Rawling, head of incidents at the FSA, emphasized the advice for parents, guardians, and caregivers to refrain from feeding infants or young children with the recalled products.
