Heat health alerts have been raised to amber in various regions of the UK in anticipation of the fourth heatwave this year. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber alerts for the East Midlands, East of England, London, and the South East, along with yellow alerts for the South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and The Humber. These alerts will be active from 9am on Wednesday, July 29, until 9am on Thursday, July 30.

The amber alert signifies that there could be significant impacts on health and social care services due to the high temperatures, potentially leading to increased mortality rates, especially among individuals aged 65 and above or with underlying health conditions. Younger age groups may also be affected by these extreme temperatures.

The alert also highlights the potential challenges in service delivery as a result of the intense heat, indicating that temperatures in care facilities like hospitals and care homes might surpass recommended levels for clinical risk assessment.

Additionally, the agency cautions about possible staffing shortages due to external factors such as transport disruptions. There could be a surge in power demand exceeding capacity, while sectors like travel may face disruptions.

Furthermore, the agency warns of a rise in water-related incidents, including the risks of cold water shock and drowning.
