A man from the UK is potentially facing capital punishment for allegedly shooting his wife in the face during their stay at a hotel.
The accused, Anthony James Condron, aged 56, is said to have used a 9mm handgun to shoot Pattanee Urapanom, aged 43, at the Janpanom Farm Stay in Maha Sarakham, Thailand. After the incident, Condron reportedly fled the scene but was apprehended at a hotel balcony about 80 miles away in Khon Kaen province. It is alleged that he intended to escape to Pattaya but was captured by armed police during a negotiation for his surrender.
According to reports, Condron, a resident of Witham, Essex, claimed that he shot his wife because she allegedly ignored him while he was feeling unwell. He was taken into custody by the authorities and later transferred to the Don Wan Police Station in Maha Sarakham, where the crime was believed to have occurred.
The Foreign Office confirmed their engagement with local authorities regarding the detention of the British national in Thailand. Footage captured at the scene shows Condron being escorted into a police vehicle in handcuffs as journalists inquire about his remorse for the act.
During a police interview, Condron asserted that the shooting was accidental, resulting from a struggle over the firearm which led to it discharging twice. Police Lieutenant Colonel Katta Phudoungjit mentioned that while the suspect did not confess outright, he made a partial admission of being present during the shooting but denied directly pulling the trigger.
Charges of intentional murder and illegal possession of a modified homemade firearm have been brought against Condron. He denied ownership of the weapon, citing his foreign status as a reason for not having a gun. He alleged that his wife neglected him during illness episodes, attributing the shooting to distress caused by health issues.
Police investigations revealed that an argument ensued between Condron and Ms. Pattanee before the tragic event, with witnesses reporting the dispute escalating while she was preparing to depart on a motorcycle.
Local sources indicated that Condron had resided in Thailand for over a decade but had a rumored history involving drugs and violence. In contrast, his wife was described as a beloved member of the community who actively engaged in volunteer work at local institutions.
The deceased was found lying on a motorcycle, and under Thai law, Condron could face a sentence ranging from 20 years imprisonment to the death penalty if convicted of murder, depending on the circumstances presented in court.
