A man from the UK received a disturbing message demanding money after his father went missing in Cambodia. Adam Mielcarek, 59, who was traveling as a digital nomad in Southeast Asia, suddenly stopped communicating with his family and turned off his phone. His son, also named Adam, frantically sought help from authorities and social media groups to locate his father. Photos of his father on the streets were sent to him, showing him in a distressed state. Adam Sr., a Polish national with a UK-registered company, was last known to be in Kampot before indicating a move to Phnom Penh.
Despite efforts to contact him, Adam Jr. lost touch with his father but was able to track his iPhone location until it shut off. After informing authorities in Cambodia, the UK, and Poland, the son eventually hired a private investigator from the UK operating in Southeast Asia to assist in the search. Two weeks later, a Chinese individual visited the Polish consulate in Cambodia claiming knowledge of the missing man’s whereabouts.
The Chinese man shared photos of the emaciated father with the family but demanded payment before revealing his location. Despite offering a reward, the man insisted on cash and raised suspicions of a scam. The family then engaged Crest Hawk, a private investigator firm, which identified potential fraudulent activity. Eventually, a local woman named Pich discovered the father living on the streets and alerted the son. The father was found, received medical treatment, and preparations were made for their return to Europe.
The son expressed concern about his father’s mental health and planned to seek professional care upon their return. A GoFundMe page was set up to cover expenses related to the incident. The journey back to Europe is scheduled through Paris and Warsaw, with the son emphasizing the need for ongoing support for his father’s well-being.
