Experts have raised concerns about the presence of questionable cosmetic products on the UK market through Amazon. A parliamentary committee has delved into the unregulated cosmetics industry in the country, highlighting products like a skin cream sourced from toxic frogs.
During a session by the Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee, it was disclosed that Kambo, a hazardous substance extracted from the giant monkey frog, is among the items being distributed by unauthorized vendors. Richard Knight, an authority on cosmetics and beauty at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, emphasized the risks posed to British consumers by unregulated sellers operating on the Amazon platform.
Knight singled out Kambo as a product of concern, derived from secretions of Amazonian tree frogs, and highlighted the associated health hazards such as deaths, seizures, liver failure, and heart attacks. Despite its historical use in shamanic rituals, the substance has been linked to severe health complications. Notably, Amazon clarified that it does not retail Kambo.
Moreover, Knight flagged other dubious products like UV nail gels and skin lighteners as potential risks to consumers. He pointed out the prevalence of such “snake oil” type products, some of which originate from the U.S. and could contain ingredients not permissible in the UK due to differing regulatory standards.
The committee’s discussion touched on the alarming trend of cosmetic procedures leading to health issues, including the injection of fillers into the penis for girth enhancement. Health Minister Karin Smith was questioned about impending legislation to better oversee the industry, following instances of harmful outcomes and significant costs to the healthcare system.
In response to these concerns, an Amazon spokesperson highlighted the company’s commitment to customer safety, affirming that all products on their platform must adhere to relevant laws and policies. Stringent measures are in place to verify sellers’ identities and scrutinize product listings for compliance, with prompt action against fraudulent or abusive practices.
The Mirror’s initiative to advocate for stricter regulations in the cosmetics sector, known as “Ban the Cosmetic Cowboys,” underscores the urgency of addressing unsafe practices that endanger consumers’ well-being. As public awareness grows, the need for enhanced oversight and accountability in the industry becomes increasingly vital.
